Scotty Smiley is a retired United States Army officer and an author who was blinded in action while fighting in Iraq. He was the first blind active-duty officer in the United States Army since World War II. Smiley graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2003 and went on to serve in Iraq as part of the 10th Mountain Division. In 2005, he was injured when a suicide bomber detonated his weapon near the vehicle he was in, causing him to become permanently blinded.
After his injury, Smiley returned to the United States and earned an MBA from Duke University. He later became a motivational speaker and the founder of Hope Unseen, a non-profit organization that helps people overcome adversity. In 2010, he published a memoir titled Hope Unseen: The Story of the U.S. Army's First Blind Active-Duty Officer. Smiley has received numerous awards and honors, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the MacArthur Leadership Award.
